Gardening in containers allows you to enjoy plants in areas where a traditional garden can’t be grown: a balcony, a rooftop, a deck or the stoop of your mobile home. Here are some ideas for your container garden.
Decide whether you want containers that are moveable or stationary.
The size, shape and material of the container should be conducive to your plant’s health and should complement the plant aesthetically.
Make sure your pot has adequate drainage. Set containers on bricks or blocks to allow free drainage. Line the base of the pot
with newspaper to prevent soil loss.
Place your container plants near a water source. Container plants need more water than those planted in the ground.
Use mulch to slow water evaporation, keep the soil cool and deter weeds. Line hanging baskets with sphagnum moss for water retention.
Use a good potting soil mix, not garden soil.
Choose plants with similar water, sun, heat and food requirements and don’t be afraid to switch out plants when one starts to fade.
